The 3rd Annual Illinois HDSA State Convention was held on April 20, 2002 at the Hilton Northbrook. It was attended by more than 150 people and, once again, proved to be an informative, exciting day, filled with tremendous hope.
The Convention was chaired by our own Dr. Kathleen Shannon, Neurologist from Rush Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center, who led an interesting talk on From Bench to BedsideMoving Research from the Laboratory to the Clinic.
Other speakers included Michael J. Schrift, D.O., Psychiatrist from The Chicago Medical School, who spoke on Psychiatric Aspects of Huntingtons Disease---Recognition & Management, and Dr. Rick Morimoto, Ph.D. and Neuroscientist from Northwestern University, who we have all grown to respect so much for the research he is doing toward the cure of HD. He updated us on the research taking place locally and gave us so much to hope for. Other participants included: Dr. Dillie Grunauer, Neurology, Cook County Hospital and Dr. Steve Clingerman, Psychiatry, Cook County Hospital and HDSA Board Member.
The middle of the day brought us a delicious lunch followed by 4 Breakout Sessions entitled: HD Patients, At-Risk,Caregiver and 21 and Younger. Following lunch a special presentation was made to 3 past HDSA-IL Board Members recognizing their many years of dedication and service to the HD Community. They are: Mollie Simon,Joyce Burns, Maryann Moynihan.
One of the highlights of the day was a panel discussion made up of HD patients and caregivers who so candidly discussed the issues and obstacles they face daily. This panel was moderated by Dr. Stephen Clingerman and Dr. Kathleen Shannon.
Our thanks to all of you who supported our Convention with your attendance. We are already planning and looking forward to a bigger and better convention for you in 2003. Mark your calendars now for March 15, 2003 at the Hilton Northbrook. If you have any suggestions for the event, please send them to P.O. Box 8383, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008.
